So I created The Creative Journal of Discovery!

With this journal I am building on my kid’s love for books, the library, and the internet. Instead of MOM being the teacher of every subject, I now place the ball in my kids’ court. Now THEY choose a topic, take out a library book on the topic, and they spend 45 minutes – 1 hour a day in QUIET TIME reading their library book, jotting down notes and drawing pictures, to prepare for a day of simple narration of what they learnt.

Quiet-journaling places them in a position to apply themselves: to seek information, learn, and narrate back. It helps them to take autonomy over their learning, instead of me just ‘regurgitating’ more information to them, on topics they are not interested in. There is a plus side for mom also- you can give yourself margin for doing your own tasks in that QUIET TIME.

I have prepared templates that every family can use for their own journals. Choose a couple of layouts you prefer. Decide whether your children need 1, 2, or 5 pages for every topic, depending on the child. Then let them appreciate quiet, free journaling at their leisure!
