Snakey Wires Craft
We really need our breaks from the daily grind of our homeschool curriculums. In all honestly it can become insanely painful and so we have taken a break, but this week we are easing back into learning through some fun activities.
So today they wanted to read up more on snakes. We have this beautiful book by Johan Marais, the South African expert on snakes. Jaime picked it out off our shelf. We got it in a Nature curriculum package from Footprints. We use the books very casually for read aloud times. We have done some assignments here and there, but for us having too many to do’s is an over-kill.

by Johan Marais
When my Jaime was bitten by a young Night Adder a couple years back, while she was playing in an open field at a cyclists hotspot in Krugersdorp, we learnt about Johan while we were at the hospital. Fortunately we had taken a photo of the snake, and Johan was able to help the hospital identify treatment.
It is a memory I never want to relive. It was such a painful bite for such a little girl of 6 years old, the thoughts and emotions that grip the heart are so unwelcome, and the hospitals are NEVER my go-to-place.

Whenever we go into this topic the memory is always there, but Jaime, funny enough, loves learning about snakes, and adding in some arts and crafts is a big bonus. She is such a crafty person; you do not want to see the huge box of cut-outs she has. She uses them as ‘dolls’, playing in her room for hours.
Enough down memory lane, now lets have some fun!
What you will need:
- Pipe cleaners
- Beads that fit over the pipe cleaners
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sellotape
- Koki pens
- Scrap card
- Animal faces pdf printed out (optional)
Steps to create your snakey wires
1.Bend the bottom of the pipe cleaner.

2.Insert beads of your favourite colour in a pattern or as desired, all the way on the pipe cleaner, but leave about an inch at the end.

3. You may DOWNLOAD and print the animal face page on cardboard and cut around the animals, OR create your own face with cardboard: Cut out the shape of the head of your animal from cardboard, ears, tongue, eyes, etc., or draw on the details with Koki pen.

4.Sellotape the pipe cleaner behind the head.

5.Coil the pipe clean to enable your snakey wire to stand, OR coil around a pencil!

My kids did enjoyed it, hope you will too!
